Various networks and corporate partners of Discovery Communications awarded special prizes to selected finalists based on their science fair projects and performances during the hands-on science challenges that took place in Washington, DC. These finalists excelled in specific science disciplines and demonstrated excellence in particular skills during Finalist Week.
Darby will enjoy an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Known as one of Maryland's leading tourist attractions, the Aquarium provides engaging exhibits that focus on the beauty of the aquatic world. Darby will have a sneak peek into the daily operations of the Aquarium, including sections not normally open to the public. She will get to see firsthand what it takes to maintain some the Aquarium's world-class exhibits. This award was presented to the finalist displaying long term interest in, and understanding of, living things and systems; their interactions and relationships.

This award was presented to the YSC finalist exhibiting ingenious methods and visionary efforts to satisfy personal scientific curiosity.
Gokul will join Build It Bigger host Danny Forster on a unique journey of New York City's famous skyline. Just as in Build It Bigger, Danny's experience as a professional architect and his enthusiasm for design allow him to break down Manhattan's most intricate engineering marvels. His knowledge of architecture is sure to give Gokul a fascinating, entirely new perspective and appreciation for Manhattan's unique skyline. This award was presented to the YSC finalist demonstrating the skills of a patient problem solver, and who maintains fidelity to truth and accuracy in their work.
Laurie will be whisked off to upstate New York for an exciting two-week experience at the Five Points summer academic program at Union College. The course of study: Forensic Science. Laurie will become a real life CSI, participating in mock crime scenes, analyzing and interpreting clues, and exploring the principles and procedures of collection, preservation, documentation, and analysis of physical evidence. After a whirlwind week of making new friends and exploring exciting ideas, she will be whisked off on a trip to New York City where she will be immersed in a real-world learning environment. This award was presented to the finalist exhibiting proficiency in precise and accurate science investigations and analytical technique.
Karl will enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. He'll meet professional astronomers and learn about their research. Weather permitting, he will have a chance to look through Percival Lowell's historic 24" refracting telescope, and to visit Lowell's research station at Anderson Mesa, to watch real research observations in progress. This award was presented to the finalist best demonstrating a mastery of observational technique and exhibits a consistent pattern of perceptive data analysis.
Planet Green has partnered with The Nature Conservancy to create a tailor-made experience based on Collin's passions and interests. The Nature Conservancy is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. Collin will join one of The Nature Conservancy's renowned scientists for a multi-day "field trip" to the environmental frontlines and experience firsthand the importance of personal commitment and action. This award was presented to the finalist exhibiting consistency in hard work and tenacity when solving problems.
Emerging Networks' “U.S. Space and Rocket Center” Prize
Prem will have the experience of a lifetime at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL, where he will attend one session of either Aviation Challenge or Space Camp. This award was presented to the finalist demonstrating continued dedication and enthusiasm for discovery.
The winning team at this year's YSC competition receives an all-expenses paid trip to Grand Teton National Park. Few landscapes in the world are as striking and memorable as Grand Teton National Park in northwestern Wyoming. Just this year, the new LEED certified Visitor Center opened its doors as one of the leading visitor centers in the National Park system. The Grand Teton is home to four distinct ecosystems: alpine, sagebrush, wetland, and forest. Within the park, you are apt to find animals like bison, beavers, wolves, and bears. This trip will explore all four ecosystems and more. This award was presented to the finalist team best exemplifying shared initiative, courtesy, cooperation and collaboration while facing scientific challenges.
These finalists have been selected to be the cast of the YSC televised show on the Science channel. Judged by producers from the Science Channel, this honor is given to the YSC finalists most proficient in on-camera science communication and working with a production team to produce science video media.
