image. Product Overview
It is the goal of the folks at Putumayo World Music to help foster multicultural awareness through their World Playground series. Their latest, African Playground, does just that. It is a rich recording designed for children, yet it is far from childish. In fact, the whole family will enjoy this stimulating collection of songs.

There are thirteen tracks in African Playground, with multilingual lyrics and fantastic music. This recording provides the perfect backdrop for Sunday afternoons and is a rousing way to start the day as well.

The songs are performed by an eclectic mix of artists, representing a range of African countries. Even so, the album remains pleasing as a whole. This recording captures its audience right from the start with its powerful opening track by a popular African singer, Angelique Kidjo. Happily, the enthusiasm never wanes. Although most tracks will be brand new to children, many will recognize the stirring "Mbube" as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".

The liner notes are rich with fascinating facts, song lyrics, and cultural notes. Referring to this little booklet is especially rewarding: children can learn a little Swahili by singing along to Them Mushroom's "Jambo Bwana" and reading the translations, for example.

African Playground is truly a family album that is a musical treat "as is", and especially enriching when the suggestions and facts in the CD's insert are enjoyed along with the music.
